Beck Hosts TLC Group

Yesterday, Beck Instructional Lab played host to the monthly Technology Learning Center group meeting. The TLC is a faculty group that meets to discuss new topics in teaching here at Washington College. Instructional Technology partnered with the TLC to bring a special event titled “Technology Innovations and Media” which covered iTunes U, Facebook and the implications for our community.

Nancy kicked off the event with a description of what iTunes U is and how we intend to take advantage of it to offer up a WC public site. We explored the issues of copyright and fair use that go along with posting content online and other concerns in a brief Q&A segment. Nancy left the participants with a call for original content.

Attention next turned to a panel discussion of Facebook. The panelists - Corey Olsen and Joshua First of the English Department and Kathryn Bursick of the Rose O’Neill Literary House - gave overviews of how they are using Facebook to connect with students, publicize events and communicate with the campus.

Discussion of everything followed and was very lively causing many participants to leave ready to sign up for Facebook accounts and start digging through all iTunes U has to offer. Or, at the very least, give the two services so serious “brain space” as they mull over the ethics of each.

Many thanks to Corey, Joshua and Kathryn for taking part in our panel and to Sean O’Connor for organizing such a wonderful TLC event.
